Rissi Leads Statesmen at Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge

Lawrence, Kan.--Connor Rissi (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Undecided) finished in the top 15 as the William Penn men's bowling team competed at the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge Saturday and Sunday.

WPU placed ninth out of 18 teams with 7,320 pins in five regular games and 16 Baker games. Wichita State (Kan.) topped the standings with 8,653 pins, while Newman (Kan.) won the bracket play competition.

Brandon Bonta of Wichita State was the top individual for the weekend with a pin average of 231.6 (1,158 pins), while Risse guided the Statesmen by placing 15th overall (208 bowlers) with a 194.8 average. Rissi had a high game of 246 during Saturday's regular play.

Three other individuals also rolled in all five games with Jake Cook (Sr., Keokuk, Iowa, Physical Education) posting a 186.0 average. Bryce Keykal (So., Princeton, Minn., Education), at 177.2, and Kody Sapp (Jr., Donnelson, Iowa, Sociology), at 175.4, started all five games as well.

Spencer Fleming (So., Greensboro, N.C., Business Management) averaged 176.5 pins in two games, while Conor Fetherston (Fr., Dublin, Ireland) managed a 162.0 average in two rounds. Jared Smith (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, General Accounting) capped the varsity lineup with a 150 in his lone start.

William Penn also had a reserve team on the lanes and that squad placed seventh out of 17 teams with 7,001 pins. Carter Boley (Fr., Grimes, Iowa) was the team's best bowler with an average of 176.8.

"We did not perform like we wanted," Head Coach Cameron Foster said. "Our team is young and still learning. We found some key things we really need to work on leading into our next tournament. We will be back at it hard in practice and really dial it in and look to rebound from this weekend."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Moline, Ill. on November 12-13 to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.
