Unfortunate Circumstances Lead to Early Exit for WPU in Spring Opener
Shawnee, Okla.--The William Penn men's golf team played in its first tournament of the spring Monday and Tuesday, but due to sickness and other contributing factors, it did not finish as the team withdrew from the Southwestern Christian Invitational.
The Statesmen posted a score of 319 in the first round at the par-71 Shawnee CC, sitting in fifth place out of 11 teams. Unfortunately, the squad had to pull out during the second 18 holes.
Spencer Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) paced WPU by shooting a four-over 75.
Bailey Johnston (So., Hastings, Minn., Business Management) brought in a score of 79, while Cameron Johnson (Sr., Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Business Management) carded an 82.
Austin Hafner (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) produced an 83, while Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) rounded out the Statesmen scoring with an 87.
"This was a good tournament with great weather and competition," Head Coach Elise Warne said. "We spoke about using this as an opportunity to build towards the conference tournament. Out of an abundance of caution, however, I decided to withdraw the team. We wish that we could have continued, but it was a very unusual week. However, there were a lot of positives to take from the trip as we witnessed some good play out there."
Next Up: The Statesmen will travel to Lawrence, Kan. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Ottawa Invitational. Play will be contested at Eagle Bend GC.
