Statesmen Take Fourth at Bethany College Classic

Newton, Kan. -- The William Penn men's golf team battled the wind and cold to take fourth after they competed at the Bethany College Classic in Kansas on Monday and Tuesday.

Head Coach Darin Fisher mentioned on the weather, "Day two was really windy and cold and it affected the way we started.  I was very pleased with the way that we battled back middle of the round, and we were able to finish fourth in a very tough field."

The navy and gold placed fourth out of 13 teams with a three-round score of 897 (295-298-304) at Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

Weatherford College took first place after shooting 862 (284-294-284).

Topping the rankings for individuals in the 68-player field was Dawson Langan of Weatherford with a 212 (69-75-68).

Mario Palain (Fr., Zaragoza, Spain, Business Management) finished the competition with four birdies on the last seven holes to lead the Statesmen with a score of 221 (75-75-71), he tied for eighth overall.

The next in line for William Penn was Samuel Arnaud (Fr., Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France, Biology), who tied for 19th after hitting 229 (78-75-76)

Maxence Moreau (Fr., Lyon, France, Applied Mathematics) started the first round with a 77, followed by another 77, and finished with a 79 for 233. This put Moreau in 29th.

Alvaro Rodriguez (So., Gijon, Spain, Business Management) tied for 32nd after hitting a 237. He had a rough 82 to start but followed up with a 77, and finished with a 78.  

Tyler Pedretti (So., Upland, Calif., Business Management), rounded out the Statesmen scoring with a 239 (78-77-84) and tied for a 34th place finish.

"The guys battled tough conditions at Sand Creek station this week." Head Coach Darin Fisher said, "The course was a great test, greens were super-fast, and when the wind blows, it can be difficult.  We played relatively well and stretches on day one, but we never really acclimated to the green speeds and struggled.  We still need to work on getting off to a better start.  When we do that, we should be in contention to win some events with the way that we battle. I'm really looking forward to our event in St. Louis, and it would be nice to get over the hump and get a win"

Next Up: The Statesmen golf squad travels to compete in the Missouri Baptist Invitational on April 13 and 14th in Alton, Illinois.
