William Penn Takes Care of Vikings in Road Tilt
Marshall, Mo.--A total of 14 different players got into the scoring column as the Statesmen men's lacrosse team defeated Missouri Valley 28-2 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday.
WPU (13-1, 3-0 Heart) dominated every aspect of the matchup, including outshooting the Vikings (0-7, 0-5 Heart) by a 91-7 margin.
In one of the most lopsided quarters in program history, the Statesmen, who posted a 39-1 edge in shots during the period, jumped out to a 13-1 lead after 15 minutes of action. Breck Putzier (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Exercise Science) scored all four of his goals in the first, while Boston Romero (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Business Management), Wyatt Christensen (So., Madison, Wis., Biology), and Seth Read (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz., Psychology) each tallied a pair of scores.
The Statesmen slowed down, only putting five balls in the netting in the second with Christensen managing two more winners. Despite various lineup changes, little else changed after the break with WPU holding a 5-1 goals margin in the third and 5-0 advantage in the fourth. Nate Blasingame (Jr., Portland, Ore., Business Management) topped WPU in the fourth with two scores.
Putzier and Christensen guided the offense as both players managed four goals with five assists. Blasingame was next with three goals and four helpers, while Cole Huettl (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn., Business Management) recorded a pair of goals with three assists.
Romero, with three goals, and Ashton Johnson (Grad., Oregon City, Ore., Business Management) with two goals and one assist, accounted for three points apiece. Read and Kenny Bohney (So., Moorhead, Minn., Exercise Science) both drove home two shots, and the duo of Collin Baliva (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Mechanical Engineering) and Eli Dillon (Sr., Portland, Ore., Business Management) produced one goal and one assist each.
As aforementioned, every category was controlled by the visitors, including the squad winning 31 of the 34 faceoffs. Ryan Swarts (Sr., Boise, Idaho, Industrial Technology) finished 21-for-22, while Kameron Brown (Fr., Wodinville, Wash., Business Management) was 10-for-12.
Missouri Valley also committed 28 turnovers, compared to just 11 for the navy and gold. Blake Cyboron (So., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Civil Engineering) highlighted the defensive effort with three cause turnovers.
WPU, which was 12-for-13 in clears (MVC was 11-for-29), also won the ground ball battle by a whopping 48-10 margin.
Daniel McQuade (Jr., Tucson, Ariz., Political Science) notched two saves in the contest.
