Oskaloosa--The William Penn men's soccer team took the field on Homecoming Saturday with hopes of winning and celebrating with players from the past and present, but the game did not go in favor of the Statesmen as they fell 3-1 to #5 Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
William Penn (6-4, 3-3 Heart), which posted eight more shots than Missouri Valley (6-2-1, 4-1 Heart) at 14-6, gained the early lead when Chanin Olandin (So., Oslo Norway, Sports Management) and Luigi Mongan (So., Manchester, England) hooked up for the 1-0 advantage.
Olandin crossed a ball into the box and Magana finished it with a sliding kick at the 21:57 mark. It unfortunately proved to be the lone Statesmen goal, while Missouri Valley answered with the equalizer six minutes later.
The Vikings then took the lead for good in the third minute of the latter half and put the contest out of reach in the 85th minute.
Mongan, Olandin, Milton Magana (Sr., Los Angeles Calif., Sociology), and Aaron Keita (Sr., Monrovia, Liberia) all finished with three shots to pace the navy and gold offense.
Matias Breit (So., Osorno, Chile, Psychology) recorded one save in the loss.
Next up: The Statesmen will be back in action Wednesday as they host Grand View in Heart play at 7:30 p.m.
