Oskaloosa--The No. 7 William Penn men's soccer team delivered a strong offensive showing but was unable to convert in a 1-0 loss to Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Saturday.
The Statesmen (7-2-3, 5-1-2 Heart) controlled the attack throughout the match, outshooting the Vikings 27-6, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on target.
Despite neither side finding the back of the net in the first half, William Penn dominated possession and held a 12-1 shot margin heading into the break.
Missouri Valley netted the game's lone goal early in the second half at the 47:37 mark. The Statesmen continued to press forward, firing 15 shots in the final 45 minutes, but were unable to produce the equalizer.
Santiago Ruiz-Haro (Grad., Mexico City, Mexico, Master's of Sports Management) led the Statesmen with six shot attempts, while Albert Feixas (So., Santa Coloma de Farners, Spain, Exercise Science) followed with five.
"Bitterly disappointed in the offensive side of the ball today. To generate 8-10 golden opportunities with balls inside the 6 yard box and not score is frustrating. We have to find a solution to the problem," said Head Coach Joe Minton. "We can only move on. The conference is out of our hands now, and we need to find a way to dust ourselves off and go again next week."
Up Next: William Penn travels to Cedar Rapids to face Mount Mercy Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in Heart action.
