William Penn Drops Hard-Fought Match to Missouri Valley
Oskaloosa--The William Penn men's volleyball team jumped out to an early lead but was ultimately outplayed by Missouri Valley, falling 3-1 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup Friday.
The Statesmen (8-6, 5-2 Heart) dropped the contest to the No. 11 Vikings (8-2, 4-2 Heart) with set scores of 25-19, 19-25, 20-25, and 24-26.
The Statesmen jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first set. The teams then began trading points, with both sides adding 17 points apiece in a balanced exchange. However, William Penn maintained its six-point advantage throughout, ultimately securing a 25-19 set victory.
However, Missouri Valley quickly answered in the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Statesmen fought hard, cutting the deficit to just three at 11-8, but the Vikings responded with a 4-1 run. William Penn managed another brief 4-1 streak, but Missouri Valley finished strong, closing out the set 25-18 despite a late rally from the Statesmen.
In the third set, both teams traded serves early, eventually tying at 12-12. But the Vikings seized the momentum with a 10-3 run, taking a commanding 22-15 lead. William Penn mounted a late push with a 5-2 streak, but it wasn't enough as Missouri Valley won the set 25-20.
The fourth set proved to be a thrilling battle. Tied at 12-12, Missouri Valley capitalized on a 9-4 run, but the Statesmen didn't go down without a fight. A 4-0 streak brought William Penn back to 21-20, and the teams continued to exchange points beyond 25. Ultimately, Missouri Valley triumphed 26-24 to secure the match.
Both teams struggled offensively, with William Penn hitting .173 and Missouri Valley at .167. The Vikings registered 57 kills to the Statesmen's 43. Both teams experienced their fair share of errors, with Missouri Valley committing 30 attack errors and William Penn 21.
Leading the charge for the Statesmen were Britten Beallis (Jr., Naperville, Ill., Sports Management) and Josh Bluhm (Fr., Lockport, Ill., Software Engineering), who each recorded 12 kills. Beallis was particularly efficient, posting an impressive .429 hitting percentage. Ben Cemeno-Castillo (Jr., Joliet, Ill., Business Management) also contributed 10 kills.
Brady Zell (Fr., Wales, Wis., Business Management) played a pivotal role in orchestrating the offense, setting a match-high 39 assists. On defense, João Gabriel Filippelli (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Business Management) led the team with 20 digs, followed by Zell with 11.
The Statesmen also made a strong defensive stand at the net, recording 14 blocks. Beallis was a standout, finishing with seven block assists. Ben Brinkman (Fr., Appleton, Wis., Undecided) added two solo blocks and four block assists, while Zell chipped in six block assists.
