Service Errors Derail No. 6 Statesmen in Five-Set Battle with No. 13 Grand View
Oskaloosa--The No. 6 William Penn men's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought five-set Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup to No. 13 Grand View Wednesday night inside Penn Gym.
William Penn (7-3, 4-2 Heart) fell 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 5-15 to the Vikings (4-4, 3-3 Heart). Despite the defeat, the Statesmen found their rhythm offensively for much of the night, posting set hitting percentages of .154, .351, .382, .393, and .056.
The opening set featured early control from the Navy and Gold, who jumped ahead 5-2. A 4-1 push extended the lead to 16-11 before Grand View answered with a 5-1 run to trim the margin to one at 17-16. The Vikings later strung together six of eight points to claim a 22-21 advantage and held off William Penn late to take the set 25-23.
Grand View carried that momentum into the second frame, building a 14-9 edge. The Statesmen responded with an 8-3 surge to knot the score at 20-20 and again evened it at 23-23. However, the Vikings secured the final two points to take a 2-0 match lead.
Facing a sweep, William Penn elevated its play in the third. Trailing 13-10, the Statesmen battled back to tie the set at 16-16 before closing on a commanding 9-4 run to claim a 25-20 win.
The fourth set delivered another tight battle. After Grand View held a narrow 7-6 edge, William Penn answered with three consecutive points and later broke a 13-13 tie with another three-point burst to lead 18-15. The squads traded points down the stretch, but the Statesmen maintained control to secure a 25-22 victory and force a decisive fifth set.
The momentum swung sharply in the finale as Grand View opened on a dominant 15-5 run to seal the match.
Statistically, William Penn held a 63-62 edge in kills and recorded a .282 team attack percentage compared to Grand View's .224 mark. The Statesmen also benefited from a 27-19 advantage in opponent attack errors.
Service pressure proved decisive. While William Penn tallied seven aces to Grand View's five, the Statesmen committed 21 service errors compared to just four by the Vikings — a margin that loomed large in a tightly contested match.
Ben Cemeno-Castillo (Sr., Joliet, Ill., Business Management) led the offense with 20 kills, while Emilio Spanner (Sr., Sint Eustatius, Sports Management) added 19. Marton Sebestyen (Fr., Gyenesdias, Hungary, Business Management) and Britten Beallis (Sr., Naperville, Ill., Sports Management) each recorded nine kills.
Taylor Brummond (Jr., Winsted, Minn., Sports Management) collected 18 digs. Brady Zell (So., Wales, Wis., Business Management) directed the offense with 52 assists. At the net, Ben Brinkman (So., Appleton, Wis., Sports Management) posted five block assists, while Cemeno-Castillo and Spanner each added five block assists.
