Four Win as Statesmen Drop 28-21 Matchup with Ravens

Atchison, Kan.--The William Penn men's wrestling team left the state Tuesday, but was not able to bring home a victory in a 28-21 Heart of America Athletic Conference dual loss to Benedictine.

WPU (5-5, 3-4 Heart) claimed victory at four weights (three by bonus points), but also lost four matches by bonus points in the setback.

Already behind 12-0 after the first two bouts, Noah Aken (Fr., Omaha, Neb., Physical Education) got the navy and gold on the board at 141 pounds by defeating Fischer Valleroy 10-6.

The following two matches went in favor of BC, however, as the hosts built the advantage to 22-3.  William Penn then answered with back-to-back falls.  165-pounder Matheson Meade (So., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) pinned Cullen Bruner in a time of 5:39, while Makail Stanley (So., Oreana, Ill., Biology) did the same against Zach Kottenstette in just 38 seconds at 174 pounds.

The meet came down to the final two contested matches and unfortunately they were both claimed by the Ravens via decision to lock up the Benedictine team win.

Maxwell Diaz (Jr., Miami, Fla., Sports Management) closed out the evening by taking the forfeit at heavyweight.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. Friday and Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational.  Action begins at noon on Friday, while Saturday's action starts at 9 a.m.
