WPU Wraps Up Dual Season with Split of Heart Meets

Oskaloosa--The William Penn men's wrestling team had a little good mixed with a little bad Thursday as it finished its dual meet season with a pair of Heart of America Athletic Conference competitions.

The Statesmen (5-12, 2-6 Heart), which was competing in Penn Gymnasium for the first time since the 2019-2020 campaign, began the night with a 32-14 win over Benedictine, but then fell 37-15 to Grand View (11-2, 6-0 Heart) in the nightcap.

After dropping the first bout against the Ravens (3-5, 0-5 Heart), the hosts drew even at 6-6 when Lane Scorpil (So., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Industrial Technology) pinned Brock Sutton in 2:53.

The fall started a run of six consecutive victories for the navy and gold.  141-pounder Sabri Sino (So., Franklin, Wis., Sports Management) was next with a 6-0 shutout of Hayden Biggs, while Trent Evans (Fr., Houston, Texas, Civil Engineering) won by fall at 149 pounds against Mason Scholtz in a time of 2:52.

157-pounder Braden Peglow (So., Vail, Ariz., Business Management) then got past Kaleb Jestes 10-6 before the home squad rattled off a pair of major-decision wins.  Ryan Van Donselaar (Jr., Otley, Iowa, Exercise Science) had his hand raised by winning 14-4 over Vincent Carpena at 165 pounds, while Branson Bottorff (Sr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) dumped Sean Stara 10-1 at 174 pounds.

197-pounder Jesse Schwery (So., Panama, Iowa, Secondary Education) capped WPU's streak as he pinned Todd Daniels in a time of 4:27.

William Penn unfortunately could not complete the sweep for the night.  It did, however, take an early advantage as Brendan Nantz (So., Tipton, Iowa, Industrial Technology) earned a forfeit at 125 pounds.

Following a few setbacks, 165-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Jr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Sports Management) curbed the Viking momentum with a 15-9 decision over Jovon Mitchell.

Bottorff then closed the margin to 20-15 by getting a mat slap versus Will Cox in 4:06.  GVU would not allow the Statesmen to get any closer, though, as it won the last three bouts of the evening.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Open.  Action begins at 9 a.m.
