Five Earn Academic All-District Honors

Five Earn Academic All-District Honors

Oskaloosa--Five members of the Statesmen softball team earned postseason scholar-athlete recognition as the College Sports Communicators academic all-district softball teams were announced Tuesday.

Abby Wilson (Sr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) led the group with a 3.93 Grade Point Average entering the spring semester.  Gabby Adame (So. Las Vegas, Nevada, Psychology and Human Resources) was next with a 3.89 mark, while Chelsey Huff (So., Douds, Iowa, Exercise Science) had a 3.76 GPA.

Kiana Young (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Exercise Science), at 3.75 GPA, and Charley Geguzis (Jr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Business Management), at 3.58, also reached the standard.

The award from CSC (formally College Sports Information Directors of America) recognizes athletes for their performances on the field and in the classroom.  Academic all-district honorees advance to the Academic All-America ballot.

New this year, CSC automatically awards all nominees an academic all-district honor (in the past, athletes had to be voted to the district squad).  Because of that, however, the organization also placed a limit on the number of individuals an institution could nominate.  For softball, the limit is five; William Penn unfortunately had additional student-athletes who met the criteria, but could not be nominated.

Wilson hit .308 (49-for-159) this spring with two triples, 33 runs, and three RBIs.  Adame posted a .100 average (3-for-30) with one double, three runs, and one RBI.

As a utility player, Huff hit .338 (50-for-148) with six doubles, two triples, and a home run.  She also tallied 26 RBIs and 21 runs scored.  The sophomore owned a 10-14 pitching record as well with a 2.31 Earned Run Average in 154 1/3 innings.  She struck out 147 batters during the campaign.

Young owned a .202 (23-for-114) batting average with four doubles, six runs, and four RBIs, while Geguzis hit .194 (26-for-134) with one double, one triple, one home run, 20 runs, and 13 RBIs.

To be eligible for the award, athletes must own a 3.50 GPA, be a starter or important reserve player, attend the nominating institution for at least one year, and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
