Tucson, Ariz.-- After a day off on Sunday, WPU returned to action on Monday, facing Indiana Tech and Valley City State. The Statesmen (9-8) dropped both contests, falling to Indiana Tech (10-8) 13-4 before losing to Valley City State (8-8) 7-2 in game two.
Indiana Tech 13, WPU 4
WPU was held scoreless through the first five innings, while the Warriors had already plated five runs.
William Penn sparked a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. Marin Frazee (Jr., Sioux City, Iowa, Exercise Science) started the frame with a single up the middle, driving in Mckenna Vassar (Fr., Rochester, Wash., Business Management).
Laila Smith (Jr., Olympia, Wash., Elementary Education) followed with a two-RBI triple, bringing home Laila Gutierrez (Jr., Seminole, Texas, Business Management) and Marin Frazee to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Laila Smith scored on a groundout to the right side by Leah Conlon (Fr., Sioux City, Iowa, Exercise Science), cutting the deficit to just one run at 5-4 heading into the sixth inning.
Indiana Tech put the game out of reach with eight unanswered runs in the top of the seventh, securing a 13-4 victory over the Statesmen.
On the offensive side, Tori Smith (Jr., Olympia, Wash., Secondary Education) and Laila Gutierrez each recorded doubles in game one.
Valley City State 7, WPU 2
In game two, the Vikings came out with a purpose, scoring six runs in the first two innings while holding the Statesmen scoreless until the third.
William Penn posted its first run of the game in the top half of the third when Mckenna Vassar scored on a passed ball, cutting the VCSU lead to five.
Valley City State would score another run in the fourth, pushing its lead to 7-1.
WPU would add another run in the top of the sixth as Tori Smith hit a RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Laila Smith tagged up and scored the Statesmen's second run of the game, but it was not enough as VCSU held on to win 7-2.
Offensively, Laila Smith contributed a double, while Laila Gutierrez delivered a triple for the Statesmen.
