Statesmen Win Season Opener, Sweep Awards

Riverside--The Statesmen shotgun sports team picked up right where it left off last year with a season-opening win at the Coe Invitational last Saturday.

In an event that featured 200 Sporting Clays shots per individual, William Penn finished first out of four teams with a score of 959-for-1,000.

Russell Malterud (Grad., North Branch, Minn., Master's of Organizational Leadership) not only topped the navy and gold at 194-for-200, but the entire field to win High Overall Athlete honors.

Noah Seelye (Jr., Pella, Iowa, Industrial Technology) was one shot back at 193-for-200, while Tanner Muff (So., Lincoln, Neb., General Accounting) (192-for-200) and Mathew Brindley (Jr., Earlham, Iowa, Industrial Technology) (191-for-200) were also right in the mix.

In his first collegiate event, Colton Heintz-Kuderer (Fr., Mabel, Minn., Biology) wrapped up the team score at 189-for-200.

Holly Boeke (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) finished the Statesmen sweep by winning the Female HOA laurel at 185-for-200.

"This was a great first outing for our team," Head Coach Steve Heaton said.  "To put up scores like this so early in the season is amazing."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Waukee Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Simpson Invitational.
