Statesmen Record Perfect Sweep at Simpson Invitational
Waukee--The William Penn shotgun sports team took home every possible award Saturday and Sunday as it won the Simpson Invitational.
WPU was first out of six squads with a score of 1,678-for-1,750. Simpson was a distant runner-up at 1,605.
The navy and gold swept all four disciplines of Trap, Sporting Clays, Skeet, and Super Sporting, and also claimed the High Overall Athlete honors for both men and women.
William Penn opened with a victory in Trap, posting a score of 493-for-100. Trenton Giese (So., Muskego, Wis., Mechanical Engineering) topped the field with a perfect 100-for-100, while Miranda Bernau (Fr., Waterford, Wis., Biology) was one off at 99-for-100.
The trio of Addison McGehearty (So., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Secondary Education), Mason Ward (Grad., Twin Falls, Idaho, Master's of Organizational Leadership), and Izaac Zihlman (Fr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Business Management) also scored for the Statesmen at 98-for-100.
WPU took the crown in Sporting Clays at 462-for-500 with Nathan Roberts (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) and Adison Sholes (Jr., Indianola, Iowa, Public Accounting) guiding the way at 94-for-100.
Connor Gittings (Sr., Kansas City, Mo., Biology) was next at 93-for-100, while Cade Bowie (Sr., Benton, Ark., Business Management), at 91-for-100, and Trenton Giese, at 90-for-100, scored as well.
Angie Wolfert (Sr., Waterford, Wis., Nursing) became the second perfect 100-for-100 scorer on the weekend, doing so in Skeet as the navy and gold claimed the discipline at 496-for-500.
Scores of 99-for-100 were also taken from Bowie, Trenton Giese, Hunter Stenoien-Bowen (Sr., Avoca, Iowa, Engineering Technology), and Wyatt Kresser (Jr., Independence, Iowa, Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management).
A winning score of 227-for-250 in Super Sporting was highlighted by Kresser's 48-for-50. Brianna Giese (Fr., Muskego, Wis., Nursing) recorded a 46-for-50, while Bowie tacked on a 45-for-50 score.
The quartet of Gittings, Roberts, Stenoien-Bown, and Trenton Giese also factored in the score at 44-for-50.
Trenton Giese won the High Overall Athlete award at 333-for-350. The top six shooters were all from William Penn, including Gittings (331), Roberts (327), Wolfert (326), Bowie (326), and Kresser (326).
Wolfert finished off WPU's perfect sweep as her 326-for-350 effort claimed the Female HOA accolade.
"I could not be more proud of this team," Head Coach Colten Uitermarkt said. "The amount of dedication and passion for this sport has brought 33 athletes here who are focused on the right aspect of the game: fundamentals, progression, and teamwork. I have seen a tremendous amount of understanding from our first competition to the second. Everyone cleaned up their mistakes from the opening tournament."
Next Up: William Penn travels to Lincoln, Neb. Saturday and Sunday to compete in the Midland Invitational.
