WPU on Losing End of Rivalry Game
Des Moines--The Statesmen women's basketball team went on the road Wednesday, but came home empty-handed as it fell 91-47 to Grand View in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
William Penn (2-11, 1-8 Heart) was outshot 50.0%-30.2% and outrebounded 41-30, but also struggled in ball control with 24 turnovers (12 for GVU).
The visitors trailed just 4-3 early in the matchup, but could not keep pace with the Vikings (11-4, 9-2 Heart). The Statesmen eventually trailed 19-10 after one quarter on the hardwood and were behind 39-20 by intermission.
The situation unfortunately did not improve in the second half as the squad's mistakes were too much to overcome; William Penn was eventually outscored 37-8 in points off turnovers.
Aysia Arrowood (Sr., Wichita, Kan., Sports Management) connected on a pair of three-pointers as part of her 14-point showing. She also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds alongside two assists and a steal.
Mariah Baltierra (Sr., Norcross, Ga., Sports Management) contributed eight points, while the trio of Tionna Traylor (Jr., Springfield, Ill., Psychology), Cortlynn Jackson (So., Des Moines, Iowa, Sports Management), and Aiesha Feagins (Sr., Grand Prairie, Texas, Applied Mathematics) all accounted for six points. Lacy Whitcomb (Sr., Overland Park, Kan., Psychology) finished the evening with five points as well.
"I thought we competed hard early on, but as the game went on Grand View showed why it is one of the best teams in the league," Interim Head Coach Sheawn Bedford said. "Turnovers and missed shots hindered our success, but we will watch the film and continue to work towards improvement."
Next Up: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. Saturday to face Central Methodist in Heart action at 2 p.m.
