Tough Competition Leads Statesmen to Fourth at Heart of America Championship
Columbia, Mo.--The William Penn women's bowling team faced tough competition at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship, finishing in fourth place this past Saturday and Sunday.
In a unique tournament format, each head-to-head matchup consisted of three rounds, with teams vying for victory in a best-of-three series. The first round was determined by the highest total pinfall across five individual games, while the second round featured a total pinfall from four Baker games. If necessary, the third round was decided by a best-of-five Baker series.
The Statesmen, entering the national-qualifying event as the No. 2 seed, struggled through bracket play. They started strong by defeating No. 7 seed Grand View 2-0, but then fell to No. 3 seed Missouri Baptist in their second match.
That loss pushed William Penn into the consolation bracket, where they bounced back with a solid 2-0 victory over No. 5 seed Baker. However, in their final match of the weekend, they faced off against the No. 6 seed Columbia and were defeated 2-0.
Columbia then moved on to the gold bracket, but was ultimately defeated by Culver-Stockton, which was crowned tournament champion.
Next Up: William Penn will travel to Fort Worth, Texas from March 7-9 to compete in the USBC Sectionals. On Friday, March 7, individuals will compete in the Singles competition, while on Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9, the Statesmen will battle in the Team competition.
