Statesmen Continue to Roll in Heart Conference Play

Oskaloosa—William Penn's women's lacrosse team won in big fashion Saturday afternoon downing Culver-Stockton 17-9. From start to finish, WPU handled business as usual.

The Statesmen (8-1, 2-0 Heart) recorded an 30-22 shot advantage over the Wildcats (3-3, 0-1 Heart), while also leading in the saves category, 8-4. Just barely outdoing the Wildcats 14-13, WPU won the draw control battle.

It took less than a minute for the first goal of the game as Bailee Royal (Sr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management) took it the length of the field for the score. Emily Ferguson (Jr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science) matched her with a goal just minutes later. Both of them would score again, with Royal assisting on Fergusons goal, as the Statesmen held a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.

Jenna Donlan (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Business Management) got into the action with a goal to start the second off, before Ferguson scored another. MacKenzie Petersen (Sr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting) found her way onto the scoring sheet, along with Paola Cruz (Sr., Ocala, Fla, Biology) who scored off a goal assisted by Peterson. The visitors showed some fight scoring three in a row to make it 8-3 but just before the half ended Ashlyn Hoffman (Jr., Bend, Ore, Nursing) scored to extend the lead to 9-3.

Ferguson and Royal opened up the third with goals of their own, before another from the away team. Royal and Petersen would now be the duo to extend the lead, making it 13-4 to close out the third period.

Culver-Stockton went shot for shot with the Statesmen in the final period of the game. Petersen, Hoffman, Ferguson all found the back of the net in the fourth as they kept the lead and finished the game.

Ferguson led the way offensively with five goals in the game. Royal and Petersen finished with four goals each, as Hoffman recorded two of her own. Royal had three assists in the game, with Peterson recording two. Donlan and Cruz each got on the board as well.

Madison Reed (Sr., Shakopee, Minn., Secondary Education) had an exceptional game in net with eight saves on 17 shots against.

Next Up: The Statesmen will be back in action Sunday afternoon traveling to Fremont, Nebraska, taking on Midland 12:00 p.m.
