WPU Extends Win Streak to Four
Oskaloosa--The William Penn's women's lacrosse team picked up another win Sunday afternoon, defeating Midland 15-4 in non-conference action.
The win, which extends the squad's streak to four, comes in a game that was rescheduled from last Sunday due to poor weather.
WPU (9-1, 2-0 Heart) outshot Midland 26-20 in a very physical contest that witnessed the Warriors (4-6) have a player earn an ejection due to her physicality.
The visitors started the game off with an early goal before Jenna Donlan (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Business Management) found the back of the net off a free position shot. Bailee Royal (Sr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management) sunk two more shots to give the home team a 3-1 lead, but the Warriors found a goal to end the first period down 3-2.
All three second-period goals came from a free position shot with MacKenzie Petersen (Sr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting) scoring first and then Donlan following, before Midland scored one of its own to draw within two.
Ashlyn Hoffman (Jr., Bend, Ore, Nursing) and Kenzington Winget (So., West Jordan, Utah, Sports Management) then each added a goal to give the navy and gold a 7-3 edge going into the locker room.
Petersen scored right out of the break and then also assisted on the next goal by Hoffman. Emily Ferguson (Jr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science) finally joined the party with her first goal off an assist from Royal. Ferguson would score again, while Paola Cruz (Sr., Ocala, Fla, Biology) also beat the MU goalkeeper.
Three more goals in the fourth period added an exclamation point to the game, ending any comeback hopes for the visitors.
Royal led the Statesmen with four goals, while Ferguson followed with three. Hoffman, Donlan, and Petersen all recorded two as well.
Madison Reed (Sr., Shakopee, Minn., Secondary Education) guided the defense with eight saves on 12 shots.
Next Up: William Penn will remain in Oskaloosa Wednesday, hosting St. Ambrose in a Heart of America Athletic Conference battle at 5 p.m.
