William Penn Suffers First Heart Loss
Oskaloosa--The Statesmen women's lacrosse team fell from the ranks of the league unbeatens Wednesday as it lost 15-11 to St. Ambrose in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for William Penn (9-2, 2-1 Heart). The hosts were outshot 40-23 and turned the ball over 25 times, compared to 16 giveaways for St. Ambrose (5-5, 2-1 Heart).
Bailee Royal (Sr., Hallsville, Texas, Sports Management) started the game off finding the back of the net just 57 seconds into the evening. Unfortunately, the Queen Bees stormed back with three of their own to go up 3-1. Royal then scored again before the visitors tallied two more goals. Kenzington Winget (So., West Jordan, Utah, Sports Management) closed out the quarter by cutting the lead down to 5-3 with a free position goal.
The Statesmen battled back into the game throughout the second quarter with goals from MacKenzie Petersen (Sr., Albertville, Minn., Public Accounting), Ashlyn Hoffman (Jr., Bend, Ore, Nursing), and Jenna Donlan (Sr., Tampa, Fla., Business Management) to tie things up at 6-6 going into halftime.
Things headed downhill after halftime, however, with the Statesmen getting outscored 5-2 in the third period. Royal scored both of William Penn's goals in the third (one assisted by Petersen).
Down 11-8 entering the final stanza, WPU surrendered three more goals to dig an even deeper hole for itself. Petersen and Royal then both scored to bring the deficit to four at 14-10, but another goal from SAU put the game away. Royal one final time in the waning moments of the game, but WPU could not stage a comeback.
With Emily Ferguson (Jr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science) sidelined, Royal stepped up with a game-high six goals. Peterson scored twice as well, while Madison Reed (Sr., Shakopee, Minn., Secondary Education) had a busy evening in front of the cage, recording 16 saves on 31 shots.
