WPU Comes Up Empty on Road

Creve Coeur, Mo.--The Statesmen women's lacrosse team failed to move into the win column as it fell 11-6 to Health Sciences and Pharmacy in non-conference play Wednesday.

William Penn (0-2), which was outshot 27-15, could not overcome 21 turnovers (19 for UHSP) and a 12-4 deficit in draw controls.

The Eutectics (4-1) posted the first three goals of the afternoon before Ashlyn Hoffman (Sr., Bend, Ore., Nursing) got on the board unassisted late in the opening period.

The hosts then tallied four more goals in the second stanza, while Hoffman sandwiched her second goal between the four UHSP scores.

Down 7-2 at intermission, the play of the Statesmen improved in the third with Hoffman yet again getting a shot past the Eutectic goalie in a man-up situation just 26 seconds into the period.  The senior scored on all three of her shot attempts.

The offenses scored at will early in the third as UHSP answered immediately.  Victoria Negron (Sr., Miami, Florida, Exercise Science), with a free position try, and Emily Ferguson (Sr., Waterloo, N.Y., Exercise Science), unassisted, both beat the home defense as the sides combined for four goals through the first four minutes of the quarter.

Unfortunately, trailing just 9-5 midway through the third, the Statesmen went cold, as did the Eutectics, with neither scoring over the following 15 minutes of game play.  The home crew eventually broke the scoreless streak and then put the game away 56 seconds later.

In a man-up situation, Ferguson (five total shots) capped the day's scoring with an unassisted tally with 3:26 remaining in regulation.

The visitors, who finished with eight ground balls (10 for UHSP), had issues clearing the ball out of their defensive end as they were successful on just 12 of their 18 attempts.  Conversely, UHSP ended up 9-for-10 in clears.

Catrina Dinehart (Grad., Palmyra, N.Y., Master's of Sports Management) finished with nine saves, while Kenzington Winget (Sr., West Jordan, Utah., Political Science) caused two turnovers.

Winget, Annie Gruber (Sr., Eagan, Minn., Psychology), and Raylee Halbrooks (Sr., Elgin, Okla., English) all came away with two case ground balls, while Victoria Negron (Sr., Miami, Florida, Exercise Science) won a pair of draw controls Wednesday as well.

"UHSP is a great team and played a great game," Head Coach Joshua Bell said.  "We just came out flat-footed to start, but the ladies started buzzing and dynamically adapting to the things that they threw our way.  It always stings to come home with a loss, but I could not be more proud of our players."

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Saturday to face Ottawa (Kan.) in non-conference action at 12 p.m.
