WPU Held Scoreless Against Clarke

Oskaloosa--The William Penn women's soccer team was kept off the scoreboard as the Statesmen fell 3-0 to Clarke in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Wednesday.

The Statesmen (1-4-1, 1-1-1 Heart) were outshot 12-7 by the Pride (6-2-1, 2-1 Heart), including a 9-2 deficit in shots on goal.

The first 37 minutes of action did not witness a goal, but then the visitors took advantage of a penalty situation, taking the lead late in the first half. The tally ignited the Statesmen as they had a couple of corner kicks, but just could not find the net.

Clarke tacked on two more goals in the second half, including another penalty-kick score, while WPU could not get any momentum to go its way.

Avery Garza (Fr., San Antonio, Texas, Business Management) and Taylor Witthauer (Jr., Vancouver, Wash., Nursing) both paced the offense with two shots each.

The defense was led by goalkeeper Madeline Danielson (So., La Crescent, Minn., Exercise Science) who had six saves.

"Tonight's loss was a tough one, considering how well we had been playing," said Head Coach Andy Commins "Unfortunately, we made a couple mistakes that Clarke took advantage of and we were never quite able to get back on track. We will regroup and get ourselves ready to travel down to Evangel and get a win."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Springfield, Mo. Saturday to face Evangel in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 12 p.m.
