Canton Mo.--The Statesmen women's soccer team could not keep up with its host, dropping a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup against Culver-Stockton 5-1 Wednesday.
William Penn (2-10-1, 2-6-1 Heart) was outshot 21-6 by Culver-Stockton (6-8-1, 4-5 Heart), including an 12-5 deficit in shots on goal.
The navy and gold held the home to the board for the first 20 minutes of play, but unfortunately the Wildcats broke through at the 21:21 mark. William Penn had a few opportunities to even up the score, but just could not get anything to go. Just before end of the first half, the Wildcats found the net for the second time, going into half up 2-0.
After the break, WPU came out firing as Mia Ammons (Fr., Black Diamond, Wash. Business Management) scored an unassisted goal bringing the Statesmen within one. A few moments later, however, Culver-Stockton responded with a goal of its own, putting the Statesmen back on their heels.
C-SC kept the scoring going as later in the half it tacked on two more goals, while William Penn was unable to get anything to find the back of the net.
Taylor Witthauer (Jr., Vancouver, Wash., Nursing) topped the Statesmen with four shots, while Ammons and Kaitlin Falaney (Sr., Ottawa, Ill., Sports Management) tallied two of their own. Madeline Danielson (So., La Crescent, Minn., Exercise Science) paced the defense with seven saves.
Next Up: William Penn will return to Oskaloosa this Saturday to host Park in Heart play at 2 p.m. The game will also serve as Senior Night.
