Statesmen Kick Off Outdoor Season with Strong Showing at GV Relays

Des Moines--The William Penn women's track and field team made an immediate impact as it kicked off its outdoor season at the Grand View Viking Relays on Saturday.

The Statesmen dominated the 100-meter dash with Lilly Ostert (So., Madrid, Iowa, Exercise Science) leading the way, claiming gold with a time of 12.59 seconds. Ellasa Horton (So., Waterloo, Iowa, Human Services) followed closely behind, earning silver with a time of 12.61, while De'Avae Adderley (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas, Engineering Technology) secured bronze with a 12.72 finish.

In the 400-meter dash, Katherine Rojas (Jr., Little Rock, Ark.) led the Statesmen with a third-place finish, clocking in at 1:05.56.

Briana Admire (So., Galesburg, Ill., Biology) paced the team in the 1,500-meter run, finishing sixth with a time of 5:33.02, while Roselaure Fuller (Sr., Pella, Iowa, Nursing) took eighth with a time of 5:40.30.

Miracle Crawford-George (Jr., Canyon Springs, Calif., Kinesiology) led the team on the field with a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 134-7.  She also finished seventh in the discus with a 102-5 mark and ninth in the shot put at 32-0.75.

"We were fortunate enough to have some decent weather this weekend in Iowa, which isn't always the case. Our women wasted no time in taking advantage of it," Head Coach Victoria Vinokur said.  "They put up so many good numbers for an opener with some very nice PRs. It was nice to be able to see them really compete well after a bumpy indoor season. We are excited to watch the rest of the season unfold."

Next Up: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. next Friday and Saturday to compete in the Central Methodist Invitational.
