Baez Dilone Claims the Right Side of the Bracket, While Bostelman Takes Third in MVC Open
Marshall, Mo.-- Two Statesmen women's wrestlers placed at the biggest collegiate tournament of the year as they competed at the Missouri Valley Open Friday and Saturday.
In a tournament that featured over 600 individuals across all the divisions, 13 Statesmen claimed victories.
The WPU performance was highlighted by 124-pounder Victoria Baez Dilone (Grad., Madrid, Spain, Master's of Sports Management) taking first place, in a bracket consisting of 63 competitors, Baez Dilone finished 6-0 with three pin falls, two decisions, and technical fall.
At 131 pounds, Kendall Bostelman (Sr., Napoleon, OH., Exercise Science) took third place. On her route to the bronze in the 64 women bracket, she finished 6-1 with three technical falls, two pin falls, and one decision.
138-pounder Espie Almazan (So., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Political Science) finished with a 4-2 record, earning four wins by way of two pins, one technical fall, and one decision.
Two Statesmen finished the tournament above .500 with 3-2 records. At 124 pounds, Tatiana Paragas (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Exercise Science) recorded two pins and a decision, while Naida Abdijanovic (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) collected two pins and a decision in the 145-pound bracket.
Five individuals finished the weekend at 2-2. At 131 pounds, Grecia Martinez (Sr., Horizon City, Texas, Industrial Technology) recorded a technical fall and a decision. At 138 pounds, Ana Vilar (Fr., Palm Coast, Fla., Secondary Education) earned a dominant 11-2 decision along with a 1:07 pin. Both of Maeley Elsbury's (So., Chelsea, Iowa, Undecided) wins at 145 pounds went the distance, ending in 8-3 and 12-4 decisions. Joey Ives (Fr., Bellevue, Wash., Undecided) went 2-2 in the 160-pound division, tallying a 1:38 pin and a decision. Rounding out the 2-2 Statesmen, Phoebe Burt (Sr., Coralville, Iowa, Sociology, Psychology, and Human Services) collected a pin and a decision in the 207-pound bracket.
Each earning one win on the day, 103-pounder Lily Zapata (So., Lewisville, Texas, Sociology) recorded a decision, 160-pounder Alexa Wolf (So., Rogers, Ark., Kinesiology) logged a technical fall, and 207-pounder Diara Pomares (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Fine Arts and Business Management) registered a pin.
