Five Place as Statesmen Finish Ninth at North Central Open

Naperville, Ill.--The William Penn women's wrestling team closed out its pre-holiday schedule by competing in the North Central Open Saturday.

Out of 35 teams in the tournament, WPU placed ninth with five placewinners and 12 total individuals having their hands raised. 

The tournament featured two divisions (A and B); WPU had 10 winners in the A division, and two in the B division. 

A Division 

The Statesmen had three ladies finish with four wins, including 131-pounder Kendall Bostelman (Sr., Napoleon, Ohio, Exercise Science) who was fifth while picking up three technical falls and one pin fall. At 103 pounds, Lily Zapata (So., Lewisville, Texas, Sociology) claimed four victories with two pins and two technical falls. Rounding out the four-win trio was 124-pounder Tatiana Paragas (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Exercise Science) who picked up three technical falls.

160-pounder Joey Ives (Fr., Bellevue, Wash., Undecided) match Bostelman in fifth place, notching three wins that includedone technical fall and one fall.

Three Statesmen came away with two wins.  Headlining this group was Phoebe Burt (Sr., Coralville, Iowa, Sociology and Psychology and Human Services) at 207 pounds, who finished sixth with one fall. 110-pounder Avy Perez (Fr., Mission Hills, Calif., Nursing) claimed her two decision victories, while 145-pounder Naida Abdijanovic (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) wrapped up the two-match winners with one pin.

Closing out the A division, three Statesmen had their hand raised one time, including 131-pounders Devin Patton (Sr., Plano, Texas, Business Management) (one fall) and Bronwyn Brenneman (Sr., Parnell, Iowa, Biology) and 138-pounder Espie Almazan (So., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Political Science).

B Division

180-pounder Piper Fowler (Fr., Cleveland, Tenn., Psychology) went a perfect 5-0 on her way to being crowned the champion of her bracket. Her five wins came by way of three technical falls and two pin falls. 

207-pounder Diara Pomares (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Fine Arts and Business Management) also took the right side of the bracket, finishing 3-0 with three pin falls.

Up Next: William Penn now heads into the holiday break, returning to action Friday and Saturday, January 9-10 at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls.
