Five Statesmen Earn Gold at William Penn Open

Oskaloosa-- The William Penn women's wrestling team hosted its first home tournament Sunday at the William Penn Open, crowning five Statesmen as champions in their respective weight classes, while nine others recorded victories.

103-pounder Olivia Atkins (Jr., St. Peters, Mo., Nursing), 124-pounder Tatiana Paragas (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Exercise Science), 131-pounder Kendall Bostelman (Sr., Napoleon, Ohio, Exercise Science), Ana Vilar (Fr., Palm Coast, Fla., Secondary Education), and 207-pounder Phoebe Burt (Sr., Coralville, Iowa, Sociology and Psychology and Human Services) all claimed the right side of the bracket, giving the Statesmen the most individual champions of the tournament. 

At 160 pounds, Alexa Wolf (So., Rogers, Ark., Kinesiology) earned a bronze medal, recording four victories via two decisions, a pinfall, and a technical fall. 

Jalyiah Gardner (Fr., Keokuk, Iowa, Business Management) also claimed bronze at 138 pounds, posting three wins by technical fall, pinfall, and decision.

Three Statesmen finished with two wins. At 117 pounds, Silvia Garcia-Vasquez (Fr., West Liberty, Iowa, Nursing) placed second with victories by technical fall and pinfall.  At 145 pounds, Maeley Elsbury (So., Chelsea, Iowa, Undecided) placed fifth after collecting two pinfalls. At 180 pounds, Diara Pomares (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Fine Arts and Business Management) finished sixth, earning her wins by decision and pinfall.

131-pounder Bronwyn Brenneman (Sr., Parnell, Iowa, Biology), 138-pounder Tatiana Garcia (Sr., Amarillo, Texas, Undecided), and 160-pounders Naomi Templeman (Fr., Dallas Center, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) and Kylee Eastwood (Sr., Fontana, Kan., Undecided) each had their hand raised once on Sunday.
