Road Trip Ends in Pair of Losses

Cedar Rapids--The Statesmen softball team took on Mount Mercy in a Good Friday doubleheader, but the visitors unfortunately did not have a good time as they were swept in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

WPU (11-20, 4-8 Heart) fell by scores 7-0 and 5-4 (9 innings).

The navy and gold could never get anything going in the first game as they secured just three hits, with two coming from Abby Wilson (Sr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology).

WPU showed life in the second game, scoring four runs off seven hits.  Chelsey Huff (So., Douds, Iowa, Exercise Science) led the team with two hits, while five others recorded one apiece.

An error in the first inning allowed Wilson to get around the bases and score.  A bit later, Huff took home on a passed ball as the Statesmen staked a 2-0 lead.  The home team answered in the bottom half, however, tying things up at 2-2.

Gabby Adame (So., Las Vegas, Nevada, Psychology and Human Resources) scored in the second on another passed ball.  Huff then singled to center, scoring Wilson to go up 4-2.  Mount Mercy (17-10, 6-2 Heart) again tied the contest in the fifth inning and forced extras.  In the fourth extra-inning game over the last seven days for WPU, the result was the same as the Mustangs walked it off in the ninth frame.

Huff struck out five over 8 2/3 innings of work, but could not get the win.
