WPU Struggles in First Half in Loss to Pioneers
Olathe, Kan.--The William Penn women's basketball team dug itself a deep hole by halftime that it could not get out of, falling 65-50 to MidAmerica Nazarene in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.
The Statesmen (4-8, 2-5 Heart) fell behind by 21 points at the midway point in a game where their 14 turnovers were converted into 18 points for the Pioneers (8-4, 5-2 Heart).
After getting out to an early 6-4 lead, points were hard to come by for the Statesmen, who eventually trailed 17-8 after the first period. MNU continued to pour it on in the second stanza, outscoring WPU 25-13 for a 42-21 edge at intermission.
In the third quarter, the navy and gold were able to find some scoring success as Journie Augmon (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Human Services) would score six of the 13 Statesmen points, but unfortunately that only helped the visitors claw one point closer entering the final quarter.
Zantasia White (Sr., Lubbock, Texas, Secondary Education) knocked in a deep ball to open the fourth, but it was all a foregone conclusion as the Pioneers would keep the visitors at a safe distance the rest of the way.
The Statesmen were outshot 36.8%-31.5% Saturday and also outrebounded 40-35
Morgan Terry (Sr., Cornersville, Tenn., Biology) topped WPU with 16 points and four rebounds, while Ally Stewart (Sr., Victoria, Australia, Physical Education) was next with 10 points and six boards. Augmon added eight points in a non-starting role as well.
Joslyn Herbeck (Jr., Fond du Lac, Wis., Sports Management) was next with seven points, while White finished with five points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Next Up: William Penn will be off until after Christmas, returning to Oskaloosa on December 30 to host Cottey in non-conference action at 2 p.m.
