Statesmen Swept by Missouri Valley
Marshall, Mo.--The William Penn women's volleyball team had an tough opening to its weekend road trip, falling 3-0 to Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Friday.
The Statesmen (7-8, 1-1 Heart), who lost by scores of 17-25, 21-25, 22-25, were outhit .188-.078.
The visitors failed to establish a rhythm as they dropped their first league match of the year. While the offense was only able to produce 24 kills, defensively, WPU was quite competent with a total of nine blocks (just two for MVC).
Alyvia Johnson (Jr., Owatonna, Minn., Business Management) guided the offense with nine kills, while Alyssa Young (Sr., Winter Springs, Fla., Exercise Science) and Andressa Borges (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sports Management) each tallied four winners.
Cate Hahn (Jr., St. Charles, Mo., Biology) had the best setting effort with nine assists, while Kaya Caprini (So., Minneapolis, Minn., Psychology) was William Penn's top defender with 17 digs. Young and Patricia De Souza (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Fine Arts) were both a part of four blocks apiece as well.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Fayette, Mo. Saturday to face #20 Central Methodist in Heart play at 1 p.m.
